Filverel Petfir, who is staying to finish the end of his apprenticeship alone, has discovered the trees are rotting from some unknown source at The House on the Borderlands of the Thin Places. Morgan has confirmed that the animals can feel it too.
Maiela has a theory that the spirits of the corpses under Barrowcross are being fed the lifeforce of Minev's Forest and turned into a daemon. It's likely there's a second spiritual entity in the Sprawling Grasses which is empowering this growth. Sacrath the Two Eyed is attempting to feed and nurture the entity.
