Currency/Sigloi

A sigloi is a unit of currency.

The sigloi is a coin that can be issued by any noble of lord or lesser, it is usually stamped of lead or copper. The value is one pound of grain from the issuing noble's stores. This prevents the noble from minting more than they can afford. The general use of the sigloi is for paying taxes. So a lord will mint a series of sigloi, and send them to the viscount or count that they answer to. This allows the nobility to quickly and easily transfer money between themselves, while also not needing to ship large amounts of stores.

This has lead to some nobles having their lands destroyed by a rival collecting large numbers of sigloi, and then attempting to get their grain during the late winter. This tends to keep the number of sigloi in circulation pretty limited, but they are still a very common coin due to the number of people that can create them.
